Elijah gathers the people and the prophets of Baal for a showdown. Two bulls will be prepared, and whichever god sends fire will prove to be the true God. It's a moment of absolute clarity. All the confusion and mixed loyalty comes down to a simple test: which god is real?
The prophets of Baal cry out all day, slashing themselves, trying to get their god's attention. Nothing happens. Then Elijah prays a simple, direct prayer. And fire falls from heaven. The crowds see it and fall on their faces: The Lord is God! The Lord is God!
I'm struck by how clear the moment is. For once, there's no ambiguity. No room for rationalization or compromise. One side performs, nothing happens. The other side prays, and the result is undeniable. I wonder sometimes what it would be like to have such clarity. Most of life is much more ambiguous than this. We live in a world where both sides seem to have some truth, where evidence can be interpreted multiple ways. But maybe Elijah's moment shows us what ultimate reality is. Underneath all the confusion, there's a truth that will eventually be made clear.
