Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew records Jesus's invitation to those exhausted by religious and moral demands.
The invitation is open and specific. You're welcome if you're weary. You're welcome if you're carrying burdens. The promise is rest and the way is yoke—which sounds like more burden until you understand Jesus's point. His yoke is easy because it's not about proving yourself. It's about following someone who is actually gentle.
I spent years under a difficult yoke trying to earn righteousness. Jesus's invitation to lay that down and take his instead has been the deepest relief.
