The Israelites are rebuilding the temple, and they're discouraged - it's nothing like the old temple. The glory has diminished. And the prophet says: but now be strong. Do the work. I am with you. My Spirit remains with you.
The work you're called to isn't as impressive as you imagined, and you're doing it anyway. That's the real test. Not whether you can do something impressive, but whether you can do something faithful even when it's less than you dreamed.
I trained for a job I thought would change the world. And I ended up in a much more modest position, doing good work but not transforming anything. There was grief in that. But Haggai's word - be strong, do the work, I'm with you - helped me accept it. The modesty doesn't matter. What matters is faithfulness.
