Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.
Jesus names the things that cloud awareness: excess, substance abuse, anxiety. Not just evil things but ordinary distractions. Getting weighed down by the anxieties of life. Sounds like most of us most of the time. I'm usually too caught up in what I need to do today to be watching for what God's doing. Jesus is inviting a different orientation: stay alert. Keep space. Don't let the ordinary press out the sacred. It's not about escaping hard times. It's about being present enough to respond when God is moving, rather than being trapped in distraction and missing it entirely.
