The prohibition against eating blood comes with explanation: 'The life of the creature is in the blood.' To consume blood would be to consume life itself, and that's reserved for God alone. The blood belongs to the Lord. It's the substance through which atonement occurs.
Lifeblood is precious, irreplaceable, foundational to physical existence. By prohibiting its consumption, the law teaches: life itself is sacred. You don't treat life casually. The blood that flows through an animal's veins is that creature's life. To respect life means respecting the blood.
This becomes central to Christian understanding of Jesus's sacrifice. His blood, his life poured out, becomes the means of our atonement. The old system with animal blood pointed to His blood. By emphasizing blood throughout Leviticus, the system prepared the people to understand that real transformation requires a real life. When Jesus offers His body and blood, He's saying: take my life into yourself. The ancient prohibition on consuming blood is transformed into an invitation to consume Christ's life through faith. Life is sacred. His life, given for us, is the most sacred reality.
