Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all manner of craftsmanship - to invent artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, to cut stones and to carve wood and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship. The Holy Spirit is gifting him with technical skill.
I work in graphic design, and I never thought of my work as spiritual until I read this. I'd separated sacred from secular - Scripture study was spiritual, design work was just how I paid bills. But Bezalel's skill at the craft itself is understood as the Holy Spirit operating.
That changed everything. Now when I'm designing a poster for a nonprofit serving homeless populations, I understand myself as participating in God's creative work. The excellence matters. The beauty matters. The technical skill matters, because it's through those things that we carry holiness into the world.
