A voice came from heaven: 'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.' Mark opens with this affirmation before Jesus does anything. Before parables, miracles, confrontations—Jesus hears that he is loved.
In my tradition, we're very focused on purpose and calling. 'What is God calling you to do?' That question shaped my whole life direction. But Mark suggests something different: identity precedes vocation. Jesus's identity as beloved is not based on what he will accomplish. That was almost heretical to me. I thought love had to be earned. Then I realized I'd been living as if God's love was a reward for productivity. Mark is saying no. Your identity is determined before your mission. You're loved. Full stop. Then, from that security, you do your work. I wonder how differently I'd approach my ministry if I wasn't trying to prove I deserve the love I've already been given.
