Peter tells believers to always be ready to give a reason for the hope they have. But he adds something important: do it with gentleness and respect. Not because gentleness is weakness, but because apologetics without love is just argument.
The phrase 'sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts' comes before the apologetics. Your defense of faith isn't first about convincing someone's mind. It's about your own reverence being visible. People know what you actually value by how you treat them, not just by what you claim to believe.
Peter also acknowledges that when you speak your hope, you might be maligned for it. People might accuse you of doing evil. But if you keep a clear conscience, their accusations will eventually look smaller than your actual character. That takes time. It requires not retaliation. But it's powerful.
