Abraham is old and full of years. The text opens the chapter with his age, establishing him as elderly. But then he's actively arranging his son's future.
I think about aging differently because of this. Abraham doesn't retire. He doesn't withdraw. He prepares the next generation while he can. His elderness doesn't diminish his agency.
My grandfather stayed engaged in family decisions until the very end. He was teaching, not just being cared for. This verse validates that kind of continued participation.
