Abraham has lied about Sarah being his wife, and Abimelech - a foreign king - is warned by God in a dream that he's taken a married woman. Abimelech hasn't actually done anything wrong; he's been protected from committing sin.
What strikes me is that God is protecting a non-covenant person's righteousness. Abimelech isn't part of Abraham's lineage, not under the same law, but God is attentive to his conscience and his innocence. The dream is an act of mercy.
I work interfaith, and this passage has become central to my theology. God's concern for justice and righteousness extends beyond covenant boundaries. The same God who guides Abraham also protects Abimelech's integrity. There's something universally attentive about God's ethics.
