Jacob dreams of a ladder connecting heaven and earth, with angels ascending and descending. God stands above it, giving the same covenant promises.
When I've felt most disconnected from heaven - during depression, during faith crisis, during isolation - this image has reminded me that the connection still exists. The ladder isn't something I build. It's there. Angels are moving. There's traffic between earth and transcendence.
I don't understand what the ladder means, exactly. But I don't think I need to. The image itself is enough - access is possible. Movement is happening. The dream doesn't give Jacob everything he wants immediately, but it assures him he's not alone in this foreign place.
