Jonah finally goes to Nineveh and preaches, and the city repents. And Jonah is angry. He says: 'That is why I was so quick to flee - because I knew you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.' Jonah wanted God to be harsh, to punish. He's angry that God was merciful.
Jonah's anger is revealing. He doesn't want mercy for Nineveh. He wants them to suffer. But God is merciful to everyone. That's the thing about God's grace - it's given to people you think don't deserve it.
I've been in situations where I was invested in someone failing or suffering, and I had to confront my own desire for vengeance rather than restoration. That's what Jonah is wrestling with. God's grace is bigger than our sense of justice.
