You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. If you do, and they cry out to Me, I will surely hear their cry and My wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. The intensity here is shocking.
God isn't giving general moral guidance. He's making a personal commitment to stand with the defenseless. Harm them, and you've made an enemy of the Almighty. The punishment isn't proportional - it's fierce. That's what covenant-level seriousness about protecting the vulnerable looks like.
I work with foster kids now, and I think about those verses constantly. These children have already been through hell - removed from families, placed with strangers. When I see churches talk about 'helping vulnerable people' but still allow abuse patterns to continue, I remember this promise. God takes sides. He takes the side of the wounded.
