The LORD said to Moses: Command the Israelites and say to them: My offering, the food for My offerings by fire, My pleasing odor, you shall be careful to offer to me at its appointed time. Command them: This is the offering by fire that you shall offer to the LORD: two male lambs a year old without blemish, day by day as a regular offering.
Daily. Every day. Two lambs. The same offering. Routine. Not spectacular or occasionally, but as a regular practice.
I find myself drawn to occasional, spectacular moments with God. A retreat. A conference. A moment of intense encounter. But God is talking about daily offering. Morning and evening. No exception. Just the rhythm of relationship.
I've been in a consistent prayer practice for five years now. Not always exciting. Some days it feels empty. But the dailiness of it has shaped me in ways that occasional intensity never could. The daily showing up, the daily saying yes, the daily returning.
My spiritual director pointed out that this is how real relationship works. You don't love your spouse once a year in a spectacular way. You show up daily, normally, routinely. That routine is where real depth develops.
Moses is instituting rhythm. Not novelty. The people will know what to expect. The priests will know what they're doing. The routine will create stability and continuity. Holiness becomes woven into the daily fabric of life, not something set apart.
I'm trying to create more routine holiness. Not less intense encounter, but more daily faithfulness. The daily offering is my real commitment, and the occasional intensity is a bonus.
