Depiction of Eusebius of Caesarea

Golden Age of the Fathers (325–600)

Eusebius of Caesarea

c. 260 – 339 · Caesarea in Palestine · Bishop of Caesarea, father of church history

Overview

Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine and heir to Origen's great library there, Eusebius earned the title 'Father of Church History.' His Ecclesiastical History preserved documents, letters, and martyr accounts from Christianity's first three centuries that would otherwise be utterly lost. A trusted counselor of Constantine, he sat in honor at the Council of Nicaea and later wrote the emperor's life. His Preparation for the Gospel and Demonstration of the Gospel form a vast apologetic diptych, and his canon tables gave readers the first cross-reference system for the four Gospels. Cautious in the Arian disputes, he remains indispensable as scholar and witness.

Did You Know?

His Gospel canon tables were antiquity's first cross-referencing system, letting readers find parallel passages across the four Gospels centuries before verse numbers existed.
