Clement of Rome

died c. 99 · Rome · Bishop of Rome, companion of the apostles

Overview

Clement was bishop of the church at Rome in the last decades of the first century, remembered by early writers as a companion of Peter and Paul — possibly the Clement whom Paul greets in Philippians 4:3. Around AD 96 he wrote a long letter to the quarreling church in Corinth, urging them to restore their deposed presbyters and to imitate the humility of Christ. That letter, 1 Clement, is among the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament and was so treasured that some churches read it in worship alongside Scripture.
