Bede
c. 672 – 735 · Wearmouth-Jarrow, Northumbria · Monk of Jarrow, father of English history
Given to the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria at the age of seven, Bede spent his whole life within its walls — 'it has always been my delight,' he wrote, 'to learn, to teach, and to write.' From that cell he produced the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which earned him the title of father of English history and popularized dating events from the year of the Lord, Anno Domini. His Gospel commentaries, carefully woven from the fathers, carried the patristic tradition into the medieval schools and into the Catena. He died in 735, dictating a translation of John's Gospel.
Bede did more than anyone to popularize dating history from the birth of Christ — the Anno Domini system we still use.
