And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work — The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) falls on the tenth of Tishri, nine days after the Day of Trumpets. The community is commanded to 'afflict your souls' (anah et-nafshechem), a phrase interpreted as fasting and ritual self-denial. No work is permitted; all attention turns to expiation.
