Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father — The daughters invoke the principle of 'keeping the father's name alive' (literally, not allowing the name to disappear). In the ancient Near Eastern patriarchal system, a man's continuance and remembrance depended on his descendants. Without sons, Zelophehad's name would be erased from the land register. The daughters ask: should we be punished for his biological circumstance?
