“And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.”
They are to be responsible to you and are responsible for all the work at the tent of meeting. But they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die' — the Levites' responsibility encompasses the tent's maintenance while prohibition bars them from the sanctuary's interior and the altar itself; the boundary is absolute ('both they and you will die'), extending liability to the priests if Levites breach the restriction.
