“I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.”
The LORD said to Moses, 'How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? — God's questions to Moses lay bare the sin's core: not military miscalculation but contempt for God (nas'u et-panim) and refusal to trust (lo-ya'aminu) despite the witness of mighty signs.
