The Deuteronomy 6:5 Shema response: love the Lord your God with everything you have — heart, soul, mind. The Shema is the foundation of Jewish devotion, the prayer recited twice daily. Jesus' selection of the Shema as the greatest commandment is the expected answer — and his pairing of it with Leviticus 19:18 is the unexpected addition.
