“But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.”
But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him — the identification of John the Baptist as the fulfilled Elijah is made explicitly (Matthew 17:13 confirms the disciples understood this was John). They have done to him everything they wished — Herod and Herodias's treatment of John parallels Ahab and Jezebel's treatment of Elijah.
