“Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.”
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed — the day of Passover preparation: the specific day within the festival sequence when the lambs are slaughtered. The Passover lamb that had to be sacrificed (edei thyesthai, it was necessary to sacrifice) communicates the theological necessity — what is about to happen with Jesus is set within the framework of what the Passover lamb anticipated.

Our Lord, in order to leave us a heavenly Passover, ate a typical one, removing the figure, that the truth might take its place.

By the day of unleavened bread of the Passover, He means the fourteenth day of the first month, the day on which, having put away the leaven, they were accustomed to hold the Passover, that is, the lamb, towards evening.

But should any one say, “If on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples of our Savior prepare the Passover, on that day then should we also celebrate the Passover;” we answer, that this was not an admonition, but a history of the fact.
