He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire. The destruction of Heliopolis's obelisks — the towering sun-pillars of Ra, the supreme Egyptian deity — signals the comprehensive theological claim of Jeremiah's oracle: Babylon's conquest of Egypt will be simultaneously a judgment against Egypt's gods.
