“Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me.”
The lament that Israel has fled from God and rebelled against him establishes the fundamental problem as one of covenant violation and flight from the only true source of protection and sustenance. The promise that there would be redemption if they would only turn suggests that even now, in the midst of judgment, restoration remains possible if Israel would return.
