When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people. The application: the gathered to his people that describes every patriarchal death is the covenant community of the dead — Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob, together in the place where the covenant began.
