And the altar hearth shall be four cubits; and from the altar hearth upward there shall be four horns—describing the top surface (hearth) where offerings burn and the four horns projecting from the corners. The horns are characteristic of ancient Near Eastern altars and serve both decorative and functional purposes; blood was applied to horns as part of sin offering.
