Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation. The proposal to destroy Israel and restart with Moses tests Moses' character: will he accept the offer that makes him the greatest figure in covenant history? The invitation to leave God alone is simultaneously the opening of space for Moses' intercession. Moses' response demonstrates that genuine covenant love cannot be satisfied by personal advancement at the expense of the people loved.
