His phrase 'whose I am and whom I serve' (hou eimi kai latreuō, hou eimi kai latreuō-'to whom I belong and whom I worship') affirms his ultimate allegiance to God, not Caesar, not the ship's captain. The angel's appearance marks a transition from human despair to divine intervention.
