'then I will pluck you up by the roots out of my land that I have given you; and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples — The divine response to apostasy is catastrophic: people will be 'plucked...up by the roots' (וּנְתַשְׁתִּים מֵעַל אַדְמָתִי) from the covenant land. The temple, 'consecrated for my name' (אֲשֶׁר־הִקְדַּשְׁתִּי לִשְׁמִי), will be 'cast out of my sight' (וְהַשְׁמוֹתִיו מִפָּנַי) and become 'a proverb and a byword' (מִשְׁל וּמְשִׁנָּה). The temple that should be a monument to God's presence becomes a byword—an example of divine rejection. The people's exile follows: rejection of the covenant-dwelling results in eviction from the covenant-land.
