Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name — The condition was stated: David could not build (לֹא־אַתָּה תִּבְנֶה אֶת־הַבַּיִת), but his son (בִנְךָ הַיִלּוּד לְךָ) would do so. The son is not named here, but the context (Solomon) is clear. The reason for David's exclusion (military involvement) is not stated in the Chronicler's version, though 1 Chronicles 22:8 specifies it.
