“The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.”
The fourth commander was Asahel brother of Joab, succeeded after his death by his son Zebadiah. This verse shows succession of command and the family basis of military authority. Asahel's initial appointment as commander of 24,000 men demonstrated his military capability. The note that Zebadiah succeeded him indicates that military command could pass to the next generation.
