1 CHRONICLES 2:1 — KING JAMES VERSION 0 1
1 Chr 21 Chr 2:2
These are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun,
Israel's twelve sons are introduced as the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel, and their listing marks the foundational genealogical structure upon which all subsequent Israelite society would be organized. The twelve sons represent the genealogical foundation of Israel's tribal system and the basis for land distribution, census organization, and religious responsibility. The theological significance of listing the twelve sons demonstrates that Israel's national structure was genealogically rooted—the twelve tribes emerged from the twelve sons of Jacob, making genealogy itself the fundamental organizing principle of Israelite society. The twelve-fold structure reflects the theological principle of covenant inclusivity—all twelve tribes shared in the covenantal relationship with God, even though some would be distinguished by particular roles. For the post-exilic community, the listing of the twelve sons affirms their identity as Israelites and their participation in the covenant community.
