In the beginning
What strikes me most about this verse is the absolute confidence of it. There is no argument, no philosophical defence, no attempt to prove God's existence — just a bare, majestic declaration: in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Moses writes as though the reader already knows this is true, and the job of the text is simply to say it clearly. I find that incredibly grounding, especially in seasons when doubt creeps in. The world tries to offer alternative stories about where everything came from, but none of them begin with a personal God who creates with intention and care. This verse doesn't just describe the origin of the universe — it establishes who is in charge of it. And if He was sovereign before the beginning, He is sovereign now.
