First words
Every time I read this verse I feel as though I am standing at the edge of something infinite and being invited to step in. The simplicity is what overwhelms me. No preamble, no explanation, no argument — just: in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Nothing existed, and then God spoke, and everything existed. That is not just cosmology, it is an act of pure grace. We did not ask to be here. The universe did not petition God for its own existence. He brought it all into being freely, out of the overflow of His own goodness and creative power. When I sit with this verse quietly, something in me settles. The whole weight of existence rests on Someone who chose to create it. That is an act of love before love had any object to receive it.
