The seventh day approaches

After declaring everything very good at the end of the sixth day, God rests on the seventh. The Sabbath is one of the most theologically loaded institutions in Scripture, and it is rooted here in creation itself before any law is given. God's rest on the seventh day is not exhaustion — He does not grow tired. It is delight. He surveys all that He has made, finds it very good, and rests in it. And He invites His image-bearers to share in that rest — not just one day in seven, but as a posture toward life. Hebrews 4 makes the extraordinary claim that this rest is still available, that there is a Sabbath rest for the people of God that has not yet been fully entered. The seventh day in Genesis has no evening and no morning. It is still open. We are invited in.
